St. Mary’s has one of the finest rings of 10 bells in Surrey, some made in 1780 and five exactly 100 years old this March. There is also the 225 year old clock that is still wound up weekly. We would really welcome some new people to join the band to help keep the bells ringing for services, weddings, celebrations and many other events.
We are now also one of the leading towers in Surrey, for bellringing teaching and training facilities. From 2020 we have two “training bells” together with computerised simulation facilities. The training bells will make it easier for a beginner to learn to handle a bell-rope, while the bell above swings in a complete circle and back again. The simulators are used to synthesize the sounds of the other bells and the actions of other ringers, enabling a learner to practise keeping in time with those bells. They can also simulate some of the more advanced ringing sequences on up to 10 (or more) bells.
Ringing is a rewarding pasttime that can be enjoyed and shared with all members of the family. Learning to ring starts with being shown how to manage the rope before joining in with the rest of the band. ANYONE can learn to ring. Age is not a problem, ringers can be from 10 years old to 80+.
Come along at practice night – Wednesday evenings at 7.30pm
