Halloween with a difference

St Mary’s Churchyard on Halloween Night was eerily alive – torches, coloured lights, candles, bats in the trees and pumpkin faces in the porch.   In one corner of the churchyard by the tower was a barbecue dispensing party food (hot dogs and gooey bites), inside the church a multitude of ghoulish games for all to enjoy – sticky pasta dip, donut-on-a-string eating without using hands, stick the monster (like pin the tail on the donkey), spooky mask making and brass rubbing – and of course live music provided by and for the youngsters.   After all the excitement and before tucking into the hot dogs, there was a short act of worship when the Rector explained the origins of ‘Halloween’ and also told the story of David and Goliath (with much audience assistance).       As one seven-year old was heard to say, ‘That was the best Halloween – EVER’.
