Care and Repair – A service you can trust

Every week the media has news about rogue builders preying on elderly or vulnerable home owners, tricking them into carrying out unnecessary work to their properties at vastly inflated prices. It is often hard for older people to know where to find reputable builders and companies to carry out repairs to their homes.

The Council’s Care & Repair Agency can help older or disabled people with house repairs, improvements or adaptations. Last year, over 200 households were given information and advice, while the Handyperson scheme carried out 962 small jobs for elderly and disabled residents.

The Agency can help residents decide what work is needed, how much it will cost and find reputable tradesmen to do the job. The Agency has been involved in building works such as repairs to doors, windows, roofs, gutters, new heating systems and disabled adaptations. Advice is also given about insulation, key safes and benefits, as well as putting people in touch with other services which could help them.

For more details, contact the Care & Repair Agency on 01883 732818, or e-mail privatesectorhousing@tandridge.gov.uk. Initial advice is free, but the Agency can give technical advice and manage larger jobs for a fee of 10% to 12% of the cost of the works. The Handyperson scheme starts at £11.40 an hour for those on benefits and £17.10 for those who are not.

Chairman of the Housing Committee, Councillor Matthew Groves, said: “The Care & Repair Agency takes the worry out of finding a reputable person or company to carry out work on your house. Please don’t accept quotes from people who knock on your door, instead contact our Agency on 01883 732818.
