3Rs in Surrey: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

Surrey is now in the midst of a campaign to help people reduce the amount of rubbish they create. There are 3Rs in Surrey: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle aims to help residents and businesses cut the amount of waste that ends up in the bin.

Serving notice on food waste

On average we throw away around a third of the food we buy – a staggering £400 per household each year. Look out in the local media for a silver service waiter visiting various locations around the county carrying a tray holding some of the items that most often end up in the bin.

Your best leftover recipes
Send Surrey County Council your ideas for recipes to give your leftovers a second chance! Whether that’s ideas for using up the last of yesterday’s dinner or making the most of food before it passes its use-by date, they want to hear about it. Recipes will be featured on and will be used to compile a “Little book of leftovers” from the best entries. All entrants go in the draw to win a month’s worth of fruit and vegetables delivered to their door. The closing date for submissions is 4 January 2008.

Reminders direct to your phone
To help people tackle food and other waste, we have launched a text message campaign. You can sign up for a free service to remind you of the little things you can do to reduce, reuse and recycle, such as planning your shopping and taking reusable bags to the shops. Anyone can get the updates by texting REDUCE to 83010. Your sign up text message will be charged at your standard network operator rate. The service can be stopped at any time by texting STOP to the same number.

If you would like to receive posters or more information or if you have any ideas or comments you would like to feed into the campaign, please contact the Senior Publicity Officer for Surrey County Council.
